We are excited to announce the launch of the Coles Magazine for iPad, available for free from the App Store.
For Coles, this was a natural extension of their popular Coles Magazine, which is Australia’s most widely distributed food magazine, delivering more than 15m copies into stores every year. Packed with around 40 recipes an issue, customers say they love the inspiring (yet achievable) meal ideas – making these magazines fly out of many Coles stores within days of delivery.
Mogeneration, an Oomph partner, together with ACP Magazines has worked with Coles evolve their magazine into a rich iPad experience full of rich photography, recipes and easy to use navigation.
Mogeneration used Oomph’s platform to power the Coles Magazine App on the iPad and is set to roll out an exciting roadmap of developments in the next few months.
We spoke with Donna Ogier, Publishing Manager for the Coles Magazine today.
[Oomph] Congratulations, you’ve launched! Seeing your magazine on the iPad this morning - what was your reaction?
To see the magazine come to life as an App is nothing short of magical. The interactivity and immersion you can experience with an App of this standard takes our Magazine to a production level that is simply not achievable with a print run of our size.
[Oomph] It’s so much more than a magazine - why did you choose to publish to the iPad?
The tactile quality of the device itself makes it fun (and extremely intuitive) to navigate. We have a very broad demographic of readers, and to know the vast majority of them will be able to engage and enjoy our App on this device made the decision to invest in this platform is a no-brainer.
[Oomph] More importantly where to next for the Coles Magazine on the iPad?
We will continue to enrich the Magazine experience as much as we can, to make it easier than ever for home cooks to plan meals, share recipe ideas, rate their favourites and be inspired to cook new meals more often. And yes, there will be something available for Android users soon. This is the first step on a really exciting road.

Some of the exciting features in the App at launch:
Localisation – by taking advantage of the geo-location feature on the iPad, we were able to include Curtis Stone’s ‘Feed Your Family For Under $10’. The design of the app means only the relevant specials are shown to customers.
Kitchen Mode – the Coles Magazine is full of great recipes and cooking tips. We wanted to embrace the environment the App would be used in and added features such as voice control for hands free cooking mode (no more touching the screen with messy hands as you cook!), plus you can add notes to your recipes, bookmark them, add them to your calendar or share with your friends.
Big bold and exciting covers - we want you to judge this iPad magazine by its cover!
The team at Coles have bold targets for the iPad magazine and will be raising awareness of the launch with a large marketing program including in store, social media and online promotion.
